This
sculpture was commissioned for Macalester College in St. Paul Minnesota
by the graduating classes of 1996 and 2000. The work plays with the traditional
form of a wishing well, incorporating abstract paddles (the tools by which
one navigates), stylized water (a grooved bronze surface reminiscent of
a raked Japanese garden), and a variety of good luck symbols in the form
of finials at the top of the sculpture. A recessed cavity in the surface
of the
"water" takes the form of a boat and serves as a repository
for coins.

Zumbro
was designed and built for a waiting area in architect Cesar Pelli's new
Gonda building at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and is part
of a continuing body of sculptural work in wood and metal.
Imagery
in Zumbro is drawn from elements of the landscape around Rochester, including
the Zumbro River, the landscape of bluffs and agricultural fields, and
the city itself.
In Zumbro, as in other works in this series, the natural and man-made
systems which comprise the outdoor environment become sculptural abstractions
in which human geometries and organic forms coexist in a state of balanced,
dynamic tension.
We are particularly
interested in the interaction of these organic and
artificial systems, and the points of contact between them. Tightly
interlocking forms, nuanced colors and subtle textures are expressions
of this interaction between the natural and the man-made.

A
sculpture group for the Minneapolis Public Library Walker Branch, this
piece stretches across an interior wall of an unusual underground library.
Eight cast bronze components swoop down the wall towards the books two
stories below. A celebration of books and libraries, the piece is also
directional, helping to guide first time visitors down the stairs to the
stacks.
